TSCA Definition 2019: Extractives and their physically modified derivatives. A complex combination of terpenes produced by the high temperature distillation of oil of turpentine residues or by the catalytic hydration of pinenes. Composed primarily of isomeric tertiary and secondary cyclic terpene alcohols. May contain terpene hydrocarbons and ethers. Exact composition varies with production methods and turpentine source.
The concrete oleoresin obtained from PINACEAE such as longleaf pine (Pinus palustris). It contains a volatile oil, to which its properties are due, and to which form it is generally used. Turpentine is used as a solvent and an experimental irritant in biomedical research.
Colorless liquid with a citrus-like odor; found in large number of oils; the most common terpene and is produced by hundreds of plants; dissolving agent for gall stones & gutta-percha; used in surfactant as a penetration enhancer.
A colorless, flammable liquid used in the manufacture of acetic acid, perfumes, and flavors. It is also an intermediate in the metabolism of alcohol. It has a general narcotic action and also causes irritation of mucous membranes. Large doses may cause death from respiratory paralysis.
Product of the oxidation of ethanol and of the destructive distillation of wood. It is used locally, occasionally internally, as a counterirritant and also as a reagent. (Stedman, 26th ed)
Used in over-the-counter liniments, ointments, lotions for relief of musculoskeletal aches and pains; has hemolytic effect on human & sheep erythrocytes.
A bicyclic monoterpene ketone found widely in plants, especially CINNAMOMUM CAMPHORA. It is used topically as a skin antipruritic and as an anti-infective agent.
Used in manufacture of camphor, insecticides, solvents, plasticizers, perfume bases, synthetic pine oil; can be irritating to skin, mucous membranes; an insect attractants.
